Lanzarote Tourist Information

In 1987 Lanzarote was declared as one of the six universal models of sustainable development by the World Trade Organization (W.T.O) and in 1994 was declared Reserve of the Biosphere by the UNESCO. Without a doubt, the best quality seal that a way of tourist life may receive.

Lanzarote has a vast number of beaches, scattered along the island's littoral; fine white sand, dark sand, calm waters and rough waters. Lanzarote, along with Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara and los Roques of East and West, make up for the Archipelago Chilingo occupying a total of 900 km2. The island has an extension from north to south of 60 km and 20 kms from east to west. There are seven municipalities in the island: Arrecife (the capital), San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza, populated by 70.000 inhabitants approximately.

The capital, Arrecife, is home to half of the island's population and it is the business and administrative center of the islands. The airport is located five minutes away, and it has daily flights to the other islands of the archipilago and mainland Spain as well as gradual flights to the main European cities.

Lanzarote´s main occupation and way of subsistence has always been fishery and agriculture until the gradual entrance of the tourist sector that has generated services and installations of excellent quality that are, at the same time, respectful of the environment and nature.

One of the most attractive characteristics for tourist is the creation of Centers dedicated to Art, Culture and Tourism. These centers are part of the Insular Government and were created in their majority by the universal artist Cesar Manrique. He took advantage of the natural beauty of the island, transforming it into authentical works of art and representative symbols of Lanzarote.
