3-day route through Lanzarote
Day 1: South Lanzarote
Start the day by visiting the Timanfaya National Park, one of the most emblematic places on the island. The volcanic landscapes, the result of eruptions in the 18th century, make it look like a landscape from another planet. Here you can enjoy a bus tour along the Route of the Volcanoes, a route between lava fields and craters, and don’t miss the geothermal demonstrations on the Islote de Hilario, where the heat emanating from the ground allows experiments such as lighting up bushes in seconds or boiling water in small cavities.
Continue the day visiting El Golfo, a small coastal town known for its famous Charco de los Clicos or Laguna Verde. This deep green puddle contrasts with the black sand of the beach and the volcanic background, creating a photogenic landscape. End the day at Los Hervideros, rock formations that seem to boil when the waves hit the cavities with force. The waters colliding with the solidified lava form a unique natural spectacle.
Day 2: Centre of Lanzarote
In the centre of the island, in Tahiche, is the César Manrique Foundation, home and studio of the famous Lanzarote artist. Built on a lava flow, it has several volcanic bubbles converted into rooms. Start the day by learning more about the art and philosophy of Manrique, who worked to preserve Lanzarote’s natural landscape. His work fuses architecture with the volcanic environment, resulting in unique spaces. Continue your day with a visit to La Cueva de los Verdes, one of Lanzarote’s greatest natural wonders . This cave, part of a volcanic tunnel formed some 5,000 years ago, lies several metres underground and offers a fascinating guided tour. It has exceptional natural acoustics, and inside is a ‘secret’ that makes the visit even more exciting. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, as there are steps and the ground is uneven.
End your day at Los Jameos del Agua, another example of César Manrique’s work. This is a space in which Manrique took advantage of a section of the volcanic tunnel itself to create a leisure area that includes an auditorium, a restaurant and a swimming pool. It is also home to the albino crab, a unique species. It’s a perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink or meal while exploring the symbiosis between art and nature.
Day 3: East of Lanzarote and La Graciosa
Start your day visiting Teguise, one of Lanzarote’s oldest towns. Stroll through its cobbled streets and enjoy historic buildings, craft shops and art galleries. Traditional Canarian architecture is the hallmark of this small town. If you visit Teguise on a Sunday, you will find the famous street market where you can buy local produce and souvenirs. Take time to browse the shops and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. At midday, make a stop in Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote. Here you can visit the Castillo de San Gabriel, a historic fortification overlooking the sea, and the Charco de San Ginés, a lagoon surrounded by colourful fishermen’s cottages. Stroll around and try some of the local gastronomy in the restaurants in the area. You can also visit Calle Real, the main shopping street, to do some shopping.
Another highly recommended plan is to visit La Graciosa, a small island that forms part of the Chinijo Archipelago, known for its pristine beaches of white sand and crystal-clear waters, such as Playa de Las Conchas and Playa Francesa. You can rent a bike or take a jeep tour to explore the island. The relaxed atmosphere and natural surroundings are the perfect way to end your trip. La Graciosa has no tarmac roads, which gives it a rustic and isolated atmosphere.
This tour will allow you to discover Lanzarote’s diverse landscape and culture, with stops that capture its volcanic essence, artistic heritage and island atmosphere. Don’t wait any longer, book your car and start planning your next getaway!
