Road trip through the coast of Malaga

This post is also available in: Spanish German

September is around the corner and, although many people are back to their routine, some others are about to be on vacation.

We are suggesting a road trip through the coast of Malaga, which is full of charming spots that will take away from the routine.

MARO

Our road trip through the Costa del Sol starts off in Maro. Believe us, you do not want to miss the Torre de Maro and the jaw-dropping Paraje Natural de los Acantilados. Sharp cliffs, interspersed with small bays and hard-to-access beaches, high altitude farming terraces are waiting for you here. This is a marine strip of huge ecological value.

Cuevas de Nerja is in the vicinity of this area; they are also known as the “Prehistoric cathedral”

NERJA

This village is known for being the shooting spot of the Spanish TV series “Verano azul”. Nerja is a luminous village with a beautiful marine façade, pretty corners and charming walk such as the “Balcon de Europa”.

Its old part of town offers your typical architecture from the coast of Malaga and it indeed is a suitable place for you to enjoy the delicious dishes from Malaga such as the “ajoblanco” with grapes and noodles casserole.

TORROX

Coming up in our road trip, we stop by in Torrox. Its name comes from the Arabic word “Turrux”, which means tower. Its narrow and steep streets talk about its origins as well.

You can visit the old Casa de la Moneda (Mint) and the Sugar Factory in the interior part of the town. In the coastal part of the town, you can visit the archeological complex El Faro, with a necropolis, a thermal baths and a Roman villa.

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Rincon de la Victoria offers a landscape with tropical vegetation. Among its estate, it stands out the Castillo de Bezmiliana , a castle built by Carlos III in order to fight the English and Dutch pirates in the 18th century. If you pay a visit to the Cueva del Tesoro, you will find a maritime cavity that preserves cave paintings—it was inhabited in the Paleolithic period.

As far as the eating, please do not forget about the Victorian anchovies at one of the beach bars.

TORREMOLINOS

This is, hands down, one of the most important touristic destinations of the Costa del Sol, with important Phoenician, Greek, Roma and Arab archeological vestiges.

From its estate, it stands out the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the noble Casa de las Navajas, and the Torre de Pimentel—of defensive origin that gives name to the village.

If you want to enjoy places with popular flavor, search no more; just visit the fishermen neighborhood of La Carihuela. Needless to say that this road trip has to be accompanied by some fried fish, especially the “espeto de sardinas” (stick of sardines).

Mijas has a typical Andalusian old part of town. It is located at the foot of the mountain range named Mijas as well. This perfectly combines with its Arab layout immersed in a hill landscape with its attractive coastal places. This is a place where you can definitely enjoy the mountain range from Malaga.

As you get closer to the coast, the rough interior landscape becomes smoother, until we get to La Cala—a traditional fishermen village with 12 kilometers of beaches.

MARBELLA

At the foot of the Sierra Blanca and in front of a beautiful bay, we find one of the star destinations of the Costa del Sol: Marbella. A typical Andalusian historic part of the town, excellent climate, gorgeous beaches, a natural environment and important marinas are found here.

Estepona was the ancient Phoenician Astapa, an important commercial port that dates back 2000 years that, today, has a great Andalusian flavor. Protected by the Sierra Bermeja, unites tradition and tourism thanks to its beaches.
