What to see and do in Menorca

The most popular about Menorca, and the first thing that comes to your mind when we think about this island is its Mediterranean beaches. Warm crystal-clear water beaches, suitable for a relaxing time as well as for practicing water sports are totally available here.

The most famous beach is Playa Macarella–a beautiful crystal-clear beach with white fine sand. Just five minutes away from this beach, we can go to a little beach named Macarelleta. The access to this little beach is rather complicated, yet its beauty is unparalleled. You might to bring your diving goggles so that you can enjoy the marine wildlife–it cannot get clearer than that, as you can see in the picture.

To be honest, all of the beaches in the island are extremely beautiful but hard to be accessed due to the lack on public transportation; hence it is highly recommended to rent a car. ¿Os hemos contado que nos dedicamos al alquiler de coches? 😉 Una vez que ya hemos hablado de nuestro libro, continuemos.

Apart from going to the beach, there are some other things you can do in Menorca, for instance, you can visit monuments. The most famous and amazing is the Navetas–megalithic funerary monuments that can be found all over the island, especially in the interior. These are stones and have an irregular pentagonal shape. Among all of these, the Nave de Tudons clearly stand out. They were built in 1400 BC and it is a classic in the what-to-see list of Menorca.

There are two villages that we would like to suggest in the island of Menorca: Mahon and Ciudadela.

Mahon is a cosmopolitan city with a great festive atmosphere where you can also enjoy some buildings such as the Orfeon Mahones, the Ateneo Cientifico, Literario y Artistico, the Teatro Principal or the Cathedral. This is just a wonderful place to go for a nice walk, get to know its people, go shopping or simply go to the port and enjoy amazing views from the Mediterranean Sea. As the capital de Menorca, this city is the most populated and here, we can see the contrast between the southern landscape and the northern one.

Ciudadela is a city of great beauty thanks to its monuments and traditional arts. This is the second most populated city of the island and it is also currently home of the bishopric of the island. Walking around Ciudadela is the perfect way to contemplate it City Hall (built over the former Real Alcazar and rebuilt in the 19th century), the Cathedral, its port (a great leisure place) or the Castell de Sant Nicolau.

 

For the lovers of nature, Menorca is a biosphere reserve since 1993 and it is full of green spaces such as the Parque Natura de la Albufera d’es Grau–a true sample of the Mediterranean biosphere where we can see species such as the osprey, the dove, the booted eagle, the cormorants or the waterfowl. Also, there are some other ancient geological formations.

A must-see visit has to be the Canteras Lihitica at night, with the spotlights reflecting on the clay-like soil–just a work of art!

Would you like to know more about what to do in Menorca? You guys really do not want to miss some of its typical villages of farming culture where we can enjoy the traditional festivities or shopping a piece or handmade Menorcan craftsmanship. Notwithstanding, the best of its villages is its gastronomy with the preparation of typical dishes, cold cuts, desserts, etc.

In Menorca there is no room for all type of tourism. There is room for people who love adventure, since they have lots of alternatives for different water sports; also for the party animals because there are lots of clubs for these night-life lovers. If you are into more relaxing activities and all you want to do is swimming and have a few soft drinks in a hammock sun-bathing, Menorca is also your place.
