Sóller is an obligatory stop if you have thought about spending a few days in Majorca. Have you ever thought that after landing on the island, the best option is to pick up your rental car at Palma de Mallorca Airport to explore it as you prefer?
So, here we leave you our essentials so that you can enjoy the locality without missing a single corner.
Its historic centre, its tramway and its orange groves make Sóller one of the most beautiful and emblematic villages in the interior of Mallorca. Located in the so-called Golden Valley, Sóller is just 30 minutes from the island's capital and the quickest way to get there is in your hire car. The easiest route is through the Sóller Tunnel, which has been free for a few years now. However, if you like to enjoy the views (and the curves) you can go up the Coll de Sóller road, a road with some very interesting scenic views.
When you arrive in Sóller, it is preferable to park on the main road into the town, as once you get to the centre of the town, parking options decrease considerably. Moreover, the town is not very large, so you can complete most of the list of things to see in Sóller on foot.
Sóller is one of the Mallorcan towns with the most flourishing past. Its narrow streets are full of history and dotted with buildings of the architecture of Joan Rubid, a well-known disciple of Gaudí who designed the neo-Gothic church of San Bartomeu and the bank of Sóller, French-influenced palaces and modernist buildings.
In the town centre, the most outstanding street is Sa Lluna, the longest in the town, which owes its name to a moon sculpted in stone in one of the doorways, one of the things you must see in Sóller. If you continue along the street, you will be able to look out through the open doors to enjoy the Mallorcan courtyards or go as far as the old public washhouse, where the orange groves so characteristic of Sóller begin. In fact, you can't end your visit without drinking a good orange juice or buying one of their organic orange and lemon marmalades, herbal teas or candied orange peel.
Sóller Train
One of the things to see in Sóller is its famous tram, which crosses the entire municipality and with which you can go both to the port of Sóller and to the capital of the island. This train has become one of its main attractions as it has been in operation since 1912 and still conserves the wooden carriages and many of the original elements.
To get to the port of Sóller by tram you will have to go to the Sóller train station and, between palm trees and orange trees, you will arrive at the only beach in the northwest part of the island.
The port is the ideal place to start one of the hiking routes or to take the opportunity to climb up to the lighthouse of Cabo Gros and enjoy its incredible views. And if you are looking for options of what to see in Sóller with children, in the port you can hire boat trips to explore the coast or catamaran excursions to Sa Calobra, Torrent de Pareis and Cala Tuent.
Port de Sóller beach
Playa del Través is a sandy beach that borders a large part of the natural harbour of Sóller. The beach is surrounded by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and, as we have already mentioned, has a pleasant promenade along which to stroll. Its sand is very fine and golden and it is an ideal beach to relax and enjoy it with children.
Mallorca is full of beaches and coves that you cannot miss if you decide to visit the island. So, in addition to the beach of the port of Sóller, here is a list of some of the best beaches nearby that you can reach quickly with your hire car:
Playa d'en Repic
Very close to the Port of Sóller we find Playa d'en Repic, a family beach with calm and crystal clear waters. It is surrounded by restaurants and small shops.
Es Canyeret or Llucalcari Beach
This is a pebble cove located just 8 kilometres from Sóller. The beach has impressive views and a freshwater spring. It is said that the mud accumulated at the bottom of the spring has therapeutic properties, so it is common for people to go there to smear themselves with the mud.
Sa Calobra
This is the destination of one of the catamaran excursions that you can hire from the port of Sóller. It is a beach of sand and small stones and is located just a few metres from the spectacular mouth of the Torrent de Pareis.
