What to see in Antequera: essential places to visit with your hire car

What to see in Antequera What to do What to visit We know that if you travel to Málaga, the first thing you’ll want to do as soon as you get off the plane is pick up your hire car at Malaga Airport, then head straight off to explore all those towns you’ve heard about, or that you’ve always wanted to revisit so you can unwind.

At Record go we’d like to give you a few ideas to help you explore Antequera, one of the oldest cities in the province of Málaga and a site of great cultural interest where you’ll find no end of history to discover.

What to see in Antequera: the heart of Andalusia

Located halfway between Seville and Málaga, Antequera is also known as “the Heart of Andalusia”. If you’re planning on visiting, make sure you don’t miss any of these interesting places that we’ve included in our guide.

  • La Fuente del Toro

This fountain, where the water flows out of the head of a bull, is the site of a legend begun by the writer Washington Irving, who claimed that there is treasure buried somewhere in front of the fountain. There is also a famous phrase inscribed on it: “Que nos salga el sol por Antequera” (“May the sun rise over Antequera”), which has now become a popular expression.

  • La Alcazaba

This is possibly the most well-known tourist site in Antequera. An enormous and impenetrable fortress located on the highest point in the city, called “Peña de los Enamorados” (Lovers’ Rock), where you can enjoy some incredible views of the surrounding area.

  • Peña de los Enamorados and Indian Head Rock

The highest point of the mountain outlines a silhouette against the horizon that looks like the head of a Native Indian lying on his back. That is where the nickname Peña de los Enamorados comes from, and why it has become one of most popular photos for visitors to Antequera.

  • Torcal de Antequera and the Antequera Dolmens Site

The Torcal de Antequera is a natural park that was the first to be chosen as a Protected Natural Site of National Interest in Andalusia, and later as a World Heritage Site, along with the Antequera Dolmens Site.

The three Neolithic dolmens (Menga, Viera and el Romeral) are the first forms of monumental architecture in Prehistoric Europe and make Antequera an essential historic site to visit.
