Who was Antoni Gaudí?

 

Antoni Gaudí was a Spanish architect who was born in Reus in 1852, and became the leading exponent of Catalan modernist art.

His works stand out for their imagination in terms of relief, volume and geometry. This is why he used to express his ideas in models, or even with improvised instructions to his collaborators, before setting them down in a detailed plan.

He also incorporated different arts and craft solutions in his works: ceramics, carpentry, iron forging and stained glass, and was a pioneer in incorporating treatments such as the famous trencadís, made from discarded ceramic pieces.

• La Sagrada Familia: Without a doubt, Gaudí’s most famous work. This basilica is a masterpiece of Catalan modernism and has been under construction since 1882. The Nativity façade and the crypt are some of the most impressive parts of the church.

 

• Park Güell: This park is a perfect example of Gaudí’s architectural style. The undulating structures, brightly coloured mosaics and twisting columns are just some of the features here. You’ll also find stunning views of the city from here.

 

 

• Casa Batlló: This private house is another example of Gaudí’s imagination and ingenuity. The façade of the house resembles a kind of sea creature with its sinuous shapes and irregular windows. Inside, you’ll find surprising details such as mushroom-shaped chimneys and undulating ceilings.

 

 

• La Pedrera: This architectural masterpiece, also known as Casa Milà, is located in the heart of Passeig de Gràcia. The façade of La Pedrera is a perfect example of Gaudí’s work, with its undulating shape and irregular windows. You can also visit the interior of the house and enjoy the panoramic views from its terrace.

 

 

• Casa Vicens: This private house was Gaudí’s first major work and was built in the neo-Mudejar style. The house has a colourful mosaic façade and an observation tower at the top. Inside, you’ll find impressive details such as the wrought-iron fireplace and stained-glass windows.
