7 places to see in Athens, the cradle of civilisation

The Acropolis of Athens: The Symbol of Ancient Greece

We begin our journey at the Acropolis of Athens, the city’s most iconic landmark and a symbol of ancient Greece. This imposing hill is home to a number of ancient temples and monuments, the most famous of which is the Parthenon. Built in the 5th century BC, the Parthenon is a stunning example of classical Greek architecture and an archaeological marvel you won’t want to miss. In addition to the Parthenon, the Acropolis is also home to the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike, all of which are impressive testimonies to the skill and ingenuity of the ancient Greeks.

It is important to note that, as of September 2023, daily visitor access to the Acropolis of Athens has been limited.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has announced the implementation of time slots for booking visits to the Acropolis. Visitors will now be able to choose the times they wish to visit the monument and book online.

This decision is due to the Greek government’s desire to ensure the safety and longevity of the Acropolis, and all its monuments, by limiting the number of daily visitors to a maximum of 20,000. In addition, through pre-booking in different time slots, visits are spread throughout the day, without being concentrated only in the mornings, which is when most people have preferred to visit the Acropolis in recent years.

The Acropolis Museum: Ancient Treasures in a Modern Setting

After exploring the Acropolis, head to the Acropolis Museum, which is located at the foot of the hill. This modern museum houses an impressive collection of ancient art and artefacts, many of which have been recovered from the Acropolis itself. Here, you can admire sculptures, friezes and everyday objects dating back to classical Greece. The museum offers an educational and inspiring experience that will help you better understand the history and culture of Athens.

Plaka: A journey into the past in Athens’ oldest neighbourhood

After immersing yourself in antiquity, it’s time to explore the charming neighbourhood of Plaka. Situated just below the Acropolis, Plaka is known for its narrow cobbled streets, neoclassical houses and traditional tavernas. Stroll through its charming alleys and discover souvenir shops, handcrafted jewellery shops and restaurants where you can try delicious Greek dishes such as moussaka and souvlaki. Plaka is also the perfect place to enjoy an alfresco dinner while watching the Acropolis lit up in the distance.

The Ancient Agora and the Roman Agora: Centres of Ancient Life

To continue exploring the ancient history of Athens, head to the Ancient Agora and the Roman Agora. The Ancient Agora was the heart of public life in ancient Athens and housed buildings such as the Stoa of Attalus and the Temple of Hephaestus. In the Roman Agora, you will find structures built during Roman times, including the Tower of the Winds, an ancient water clock. These archaeological sites offer a fascinating insight into life in ancient Athens and its evolution over the centuries.
